Birds in the heron family, like the Great Egret, are always a challenge to photograph. They can strike very quickly when fishing, and that makes it hard to stay focused on their head. These large wading birds can be found alongside rivers, ponds, and lakes during the summer months in Iowa. This can make them hard to access because of the slope of the shores and sometimes the distance.
I love to photograph Egrets because their white feathers make them stand out against the background. This picture is an excellent example of this, contrasting against the blue of the water and the brown and green of the shoreline. As challenging as they are, I’ll be out looking for more of them this summer.
